Turkey is situated on the Mediterranean, in the Anatolian province of West Asia, with a minute section in Mediterranean Europe divided by the Turkish Straits. With the Black Sea to the north and the Aegean Sea in the west and Mediterranean Sea to the southwest, Turkey is bordered by Bulgaria and Greece to the west, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia to the northeast, Syria, Iraq and Iran to the southeast. While most of the country lies geologically in Western Asia, it is occasionally measured to be a European country and is the associate of the Council of Europe, and is presently in accession discussions for membership of the European Union, being an authorized candidate since 2005. Environment: The atmosphere in Turkey has an immense variety depending on the varied scenery and latitude. Most of the coastal areas have a high level of relative humidity during most of the year which makes warm climate feel hotter and cold climate feel colder than it actually is. The southeastern province near the Syrian boundary has a desert-like weather; temperature is frequently above 40 C during summers with no rain. Snowfall is irregular in winters. Speak: The solitary official tongue of Turkey is Turkish. Turkish is an Altaic language and its neighboring living relatives are other Turkic languages, which are spoken in Eastern Europe; southwestern, central and northern Asia. Kurdish is also spoken by a predictable 7-10% of the population. Numerous other languages exist, like Laz in the North-East (also spoken in adjoining Georgia), and in general near borders people will often be speaking the language at the other side too, like Arabic in the South-East. Religion: Islam is the main religion practiced in the region, where supposedly 99% of the Turkish population is Muslim of whom over 75% belong to the Sunni branch of Islam. A sizeable minority, about over 20% of the Muslim population, is associated with the Shi'a Alevi sect. Islam had arrived in the province as early as the 6th century through many empires or conquests that have been recognized such as the Ottoman kingdom. It has also been inclined by Christianity and Judaism from the early ages. Culture: Turkey has a very assorted culture that is a merge of diverse elements of the Oğuz Turkic, Anatolian, Ottoman (which was itself an extension of both Greco-Roman and Islamic cultures) and Western culture and traditions, which started with the Westernization of the Ottoman kingdom and still continues even today. This blend originally began as a result of the encounter of Turks and their culture with those of the peoples who were in their path during their relocation from Central Asia to the West. |
